Jimmy "whisenhunt" Whisenhunt, the official caster of the ESEA Match of the Week and the Season 9 and 10 LAN finals, has broken down the recoil in CS:GO and CS 1.6. Whisenhunt takes a look at how both games react to shooting a weapon and how a user feels when the weapon is firing.
While comparing the two, Whisenhunt shows a side-by-side view which captures the extreme differences and argues that the recoil might not be the biggest problem, but the feeling when you shoot might be changing our thoughts. As a seasoned player myself, I think he just might be on to something.
Remember you can catch Whisenhunt every Sunday at 5pm CST over at Whisenhunt.TV on his weekly show, ChokePoint. You can also see his blogs about CS:GO and other previous videos while visiting the site.
Do you think that the "feel" that the other versions offer might be a reason why the game doesn't feel right?
I'll be posting on the CS:GO forums once my account gets "Verified"... Will post the link here for community support.
#2 i totally agree with you. the kickback of your screen does really help to understand the recoil. I think has it too, but not the same way as 1.6, but it definitively a tweak that should be made!
You just managed to show one aspect in how a now 13 year old game is superior to all modern day shooters.
The "feel" of the game doesn't just come from spraying an ak.
Even just firing the deagle , FEELING that recoil and landing a headshot is so rewarding i doubt that any other game can match that.
Again, this is just firing weapons but i think that the whole feel of the game we're all so addicted to is connected to movement as well.
What a lot of these new games try to do is mimic the reality of an actual soldier on the "battlefield".
Cs isn't about that.
We surpass that realness of armed combat in huge spaces/maps.
We are special fucking units and we move like ninjazzzz.
Its almost poetry in motion and its being taken away from us so in order to appeal to the console crowd that is majorly limited in that aspect because of the controllers.
Sad but true no matter how hard we try to keep hope and stay enthusiastic.
Its not just cs.
Even the most popular games in the world right now are not seeing much glory on the pc platform.
MW3 is not even worth buying for pc because it is OVERRUN with hackers.

I remember you bringing this up maybe even the very first night you started streaming CS:GO. Definitely a huge topic of discussion that hasn't been a topic of discussion yet. Glad you put this video together & I hope Hidden Path is paying attention.

What the fuck CS:GO? How are you supposed to accurately control recoil while spraying when you can't even seen where your bullets are landing because they're hidden by a cloud of dust as soon as you start shooting?

everyone talks about how 1.6 has the best "feel" yet they can never actually explain it in terms of how csgo could make it like that.
face it, only reason 1.6 has such a great "feel" is because nostalgia plays a huge role in which game has the best "feel"
if cs1.6 was never made and it all started with source, then everyone would be saying that source has the "feel"
Yup. I did haven't really think about this. Now that I have, I have to say you are correct.
This is coming from a source players standpoint as you requested. While it jerks in source its more sluggish compared to 1.6, so I can definitely relate to what you say about 1.6 being more analog.
if nostalgia had such a huge role i'd still be playing quake.
IT ALL STARTED WITH QUAKE and i could put money on the fact that half of you kids acting like you know something , weren't even gaming back in that day.
i could go into depth with this but i'm not gonna waste my time.
i see the general position you're holding and its just not worth it.
are people still playing chess because they're nostalgic ?
NO
they play it because it is a marvelously designed game.
I didn't say that at all.. But in this case, when you have the best analog feeling in competitive FPS (IMO) why change it ALL? I understand some, but a totally new feel? Why even call it CS? =O
if nostalgia had such a huge role i'd still be playing quake.

do you even know what nostalgia is?
you cant get cs nostalgia from playing quake. wtf lol...
i never said nostalgia will control which game you play. i said it will pretty much control which game you play in a series such as cs. i played ssbm for years and i would never touch another ssb game because they just dont have the same feel that im used to and have grown up with.
i never said nostalgia will keep people playing things like chess. im saying, if they made a chess V2 i guarantee people will just flame it and say "it doesnt feel right" simply because they have a huge nostalgia factor with the original chess game.
i know it all started with quake. but quake has nothing to do with the nostalgia in cs.... i played quake 3, and if i randomly went and played any other quake game, i would instantly not like it because ill say "it doesnt feel like quake 3". same goes for cs. 1.6 players who play csgo and say "it doesnt feel like 1.6" thus it is deemed a bad game all because 1.6 players have nostalgia from growing up with cs1.6
if nostalgia had such a huge role i'd still be playing quake.

#24 "Even just firing the deagle , FEELING that recoil and landing a headshot is so rewarding i doubt that any other game can match that." only reason you feel that way is because you've played 1.6 for years and your brain is attuned to the game. no other cs game will ever feel the same to you.
i started with source, and i can tell you that it "feels" way better to me than 1.6. i play 1.6 and find so many things wrong with it that players like you would just overlook. im not sayng source is perfect either. dont make that assumption
In css and cs 1.6 you can just feel where the bullets are going you don't have to see where the bullets land to know. In cs:go you don't feel this at all. After the first couple bullets its really hard to tell where your bullets are going, even when you can see them.
if nostalgia had such a huge role i'd still be playing quake.

#24 it's simple psychology. you've been conditioned to like 1.6 over other games because that's the one you recognize and compare everything to
This is a great video. I really hope valve think about that for the next updates. I don't want CS:GO to be release anytime soon... As for now, it is garbage.
I am going to go ahead and say he is basically attempting (and succeeding) at selling his opinion that CS:GO should reflect the effects of actively firing weapons in CS 1.6 without saying: Make the recoil like CS 1.6.
A lot of it is also in the sound. In 1.6, gun shots sound very raw and positional. All the sounds in Source, and anything on the Source engine just sound too 'ambient'. It makes everything seem less powerful, less intense.
the game needs these things for sure. the bobbing of the gun lets me know if im still moving. in #.41's video i see no bobbing. the small animations (head jerking back and forth) when im tagging someone or getting hit is important to the feedback when playing.
i hate how the source death animations just fall over. when you kill someone in 1.6 you know it by the animations and when you hs it looks and feels so much more satisfying.
Think you nailed the nail on the head. Hope valve sees this and uses your kind of logic of the little things that are often overlooked that give games a certain feel. I don't think they should copy the feeling of 1.6 or source but take positives from both and give the game its own unique feeling. Right now it feels very plain, its not a counterstrike game as of now. Its just an FPS. You run around, shot guns and kill people. But they have a decent foundation to tweak it to give it a tight and rewarding feeling that makes it cs game.
Whisenhunt I think you are totally right. What an idea you've explored. I absolutely love cs 1.6 for this reason. The action of firing an AK47 in 1.6 represents the power in the gun and that camera movement is significant because of that feedback. You almost know when you've been shot at first and hit, without checking your HP because of that first person effect.
The feedback is very important, screenshake and what not, it is what makes the gamer feel so much more immersed in the game, along with the sound too. In 1.6 the AK has power and jerks you around. In your CS:GO clip it looks like a chaingun from Q3A. Just spraying out bullets...
also.. it seems that not only does it jitter/shake when you shoot in 1.6 but while your running/jumping/moving of any kind your screen will jitter/shake... really this is a huge part of what makes 1.6 feel so authentic. please valve implement this in cs:go!
