ESEA TF2 Invite S13 - Week 1 Predictions

John "djc-" Carter on Sun, 12/09/2012 11:46PM

(ESEAnews) - It's go time, boys. We've been watching on the streams for a month now, we've been reading all of the rumors. When LAN ended, we were waiting for news of PYYYOUR's new lineup and wondering how Classic Mixup would fill their holes and who b4nny's new pocket would be and if Tyrone was done. Every question is answered except for the important one: are any of these teams actually good? Let's find out!

bp come into this match carrying half of the Leviathan Gaming roster from last season; as the second place LAN finisher, they are definitely the expected winners here. But based off of the pre-season play of Apocalypse Gaming, especially Rando's pocketing, this one could actually be close. Since the map is being played on Process, I do expect that b4nny will give bp a significant advantage with his speed to middle and his knowledge of where to put his initial stickies to keep Chriz Tah Fah out of the fight. Squid and Kapoww have looked like a solid combo for AG in the preseason, but cyzer and shrugger will be a huge first test. Make sure to pay special attention to Rando and shrugger, both come in with a ton of expectation upon them and more than enough skills to live up to them.

While AG gave the season 12 LAN champions a good show in the pre-season, Mixup have had more time to figure out their roster and the move of TLR to demoman has paid dividends. Boink will struggle to get aggression on to Ruwin, with Yz50 and enigma having looked just as good as last season's combo of Ruwin and enigma. Chriz Tah Fah will have to have a big game to give AG a chance, and with TLR's inexperience on the map, there will definitely be some openings at the midfights. I would watch Platinum for his consistently high damage ubers, and a little bit of the Squid action to see how good of a job he does finding holes against one of the game's top scout pairs.

There is no doubt this is the match of the week, and it might go down as the best match of the season for all the storylines involved. The Tyrone/b4nny split and the way the LG roster got divided up, combined with the amazing LAN matches between Spacewhales and LG – this one's going to come down to nipple hairs. Shrugger was one of the best scouts at Process in his season with Mihaly's Flow and should use a constant 185 health to guard Shade and pick off stragglers on the flank on the middle. B4nny will have his usual massive impact and output more damage than anyone by several thousand, but I think it comes down to uber exchanges: can Tyrone do as much damage as Lansky, and can he do it for the duration of the match instead of his on-and-off uber pushes from season's past?

From the looks of their pre-season performance, LASER BEAMS have a turbulent road ahead of them. Luckily, match number one should be a breeze – BEAMS handled Vector in a 5-0 the only time I saw them play, with Vector having the occasional solid re-push that they could not turn into anything of substance. I think DougyG will be able to pressure PYYYOUR out of some early fights, but the difference in scout prowess between Justin and either thrickstr or hibachi is just too much to notice. Lange and seanbud have had some ugly communication problems so far with their fair share of biffed ubers, but Vector just do not seem capable of putting enough pressure out to disrupt them; expect the BEAMS combo to figure their coordination out and come away with solid games.

For the second season in a row, it will be tough to write about Mixup's matches. I think TicTac will put up his numbers and do a ton of damage, as always, and Relic can probably pull the two season old revenge card out to put a hurting on to Ruwin and the scouts... but what else is Xensity really going to bring to the table? They are out-classed on scout, out-classed on pocket, out-classed on roamer, out-classed on medic, and probably an even push on demoman for now. I can see Arc and rb combining for some nice double backcaps and maybe pulling a round or two away, but anything more than that just seems too far of a reach for a team incorporating three new players into its lineup.

WANG < enoryt 2-5 by djc-

Chess Club's first match of the week will be by far the more difficult one, as they have to go up against clockwork and Blaze. While Chess have some good talent on their heavy classes, their flank is lacking in comparison – a somewhat out-of-practice weeble and Visitor the Bone Crusher just do not match up. Boomer has impressed on demo in season's past and against dummy, whose Process roll-out is pretty slow, there will be some holes to exploit, and Kermit's medic dodging is top tier so he should be able to keep himself out of the death zone when getting jumped by soldiers but will that be enough for when Blaze's jumps kick off a five man murderball rolling through choke?

I can see milehighmilitia and jaybenaduchi getting some work done on the midfights against Chess Club, but I cannot see where the follow-up comes from. Once again, Vector is on the losing end of the scout battles with Omar and weeble just being a ladder rung above of thrickstr and hibachi; DougyG is going to be under pressure all game when the flank gets cut out from beneath his feet. When tri comes knocking at the door with his pushes into last and pummels the defense with eight direct rockets, I do not think Vector will have a counter for it besides some heavy turtle play letting them stall the fights out a bit longer.

SHOWME > xen 5-2 by djc-

This match will be the debut cast for ESEA TV's TF2 division, so make sure you guys tune in and check it out!! Self-promotion is much more important than actual predictions. Despite my many words about LASER BEAMS looking a bit shakier than they should so far, this should once again be a victory for them. I will make the magical prediction that TicTac winds up getting more from his uber pushes than Lange does, and mausy will show off the talent that earned him an Invite spot against the (thus far) struggling PYYYOUR, but Justin still has the ability to tear teams to shreds on sniper and he should not be challenged too much on scout. I will be interested to see how Seagull performs against a half-decent team, to see if he uses that gigantic TF2 brain to the best of its capabilities in match two of the season.
