ESEA TF2 Invite S13 - Week 2 Predictions

John "djc-" Carter on Tue, 01/08/2013 11:57PM

(ESEAnews) - Our return from Christmas and New Year's brings some pretty solid games, with the two top teams going up against each other, the new rosters of Fully Torqued- and Xensity getting to play, and clockwork's awful troll of leaving his roster being unappreciated by all. Let's see what's going down in this lovely January week of Team Fortress 2, shall we?

By far the easiest prediction of the week - bp looked a bit shaky at the very start of the preseason, but having a team of six players as devoted to improving as they do made it very difficult for that to stay. They looked dominant in their last match before the break against Don't Trip, with the shrugger/cyzer scout combo looking dominant. I don't see Vector having a counter for that, or a counter for b4nny, or a counter for the strong ubers out of Lansky and shade, and Taggerung has come on so strong under the guidance of the rest of this experienced squad. Vector do have some nice things in place with their teamwork and general bond as a group, but the rest of it will definitely not be coming together up against either the best or second best team in ESEA.

Perhaps the biggest news of the winter break is the idea that Classic Mixup will switch over to something closer to their undefeated season roster, with Platinum moving to demoman and TLR going back to soldier. Yz50 is as good as Ruwin was, and Ruwin is as good as PYYYOUR was. They look excitingly frightening now and Chess Club will be the first roadkill underneath the tire. Chess Club just do not practice enough to stand up to the most refined, best reacting team in the game. Enigma did tell me that the demo/pocket switch may only be for Viaduct week, but if it goes as smoothly as last season's lineup did, I imagine it will be hard for them to switch back.

Lange has departed and PYYYOUR's squad has been forced to switch everything up. There are few results you can get better than having Seagull on pocket; as much as I love Lange, Seagull is one of the best soldiers to ever touch this game and he has had a huge impact on their Viaduct games so far by putting out huge damage while getting TheFragile out of every fight alive. Don't Trip have been looking pretty shaky in their practice since the return from the break, dropping games to some IM teams and looking rough around the edges while dealing with clockwork's "departure." I think that they can put their game faces on and make it close, but PYYYOUR looks very solid on Viaduct, Seagull is nuts, and Justin gets to snipe. Dealing with all three of those things at once will be difficult for the former Spacewhales boys.

Xensity are going to have a new-look roster for the new year, with TicTac having to go inactive due to work and that necessitating a soldier pickup. Relic is more than willing to play pocket or roamer, so it depends on who they get to fill in the other hole. Wonderwall was seen trying out recently, and I heard that Xensity asked Lange if he would play for them, so they are aiming their sights high, as expected. The loss of TicTac is going to hurt, as he has been the team's best player for three or four seasons running; anyone jumping in on short notice will probably take some time to get up to par, especially if it's someone who has been inactive for so long. Apocalypse Gaming should be able to find a good amount of kills and opportunities off of the scout play from Kapowww and squid, but something in my stomach tells me that Relic on pocket will not be much different from TicTac and mausy's play has been of solid quality so far.

Not quite the same storylines as bp versus Don't Trip, but we get to watch b4nny go up against Platinum on Viaduct. There will probably not be a more compelling demoman duel this season, with an incredibly aggressive demo in Plat going up against the more reserved but supremely intelligent b4nny. The rest of the teams match up pretty well, with TLR and Lansky arguably being the two best pockets this season, and the always great scout fights that will happen between Mixup's Asian Sensations and bp's Invite Pug Gods. Viaduct between two evenly matched teams comes down to how good they are at taking advantage of the brief windows to cap, which team can take more time off as they trade back and forth while keeping their medics alive. The biggest difference for me is that Mixup just have had their core together for so long and functioning so well together, while bp are about a month deep into that state.

ESEA TV's match of the week! Make sure to check out me and cbear casting this on our Twitch channel. The new look Fully Torqued roster gets to square off with the Chess Club's youth squad (and also old man boomer). New medic for Torqued, TheFragile, was long considered the best Viaduct medic having one of the smartest strategies for it. He will have to reinvent his play to catch up to modern day TF2, however, though he will get former teammate Justin's sniper scope to help him out. The unsung hero of this match for Torqued might be Zbryan, who has long been respected for his roaming ability and is finally starting on a good enough team to show it. Chess Club will be relying on their combo players as always, looking for big play out of boomer and tri to carry them. Weeble's sniping should make an appearance, and his duels versus Justin will impress; look out for all kinds of quick scopes, 360 twirls, fake scopes and no scopes while the other five players fight each other on the point.

Many people expect these teams to finish at the bottom of the standings; this is probably their first real chance to strut their stuff. Playing against more established teams or more experienced teams at the start of the season is a tough hump to overcome, but AG and Vector got to face off last season in IM and their comfort levels with each other will be higher than when facing off versus the more aggressive, fast-paced Mixup and bp and Don't Trip squads. I expect a huge game out of AG's combo, with Rando definitely out-fighting Vector on ubers, but Hibachi and jaybenaduchi are going to be problematic for AG's flank to deal with. I think AG are the better team currently, so I give them a decent edge for now, but Vector have more room to grow than any other Invite team and could burst forth from their shell at any point.

Don't Trip will be coming in with clockwork aka whaz^ as on fire as he has ever been, often doubling up on the kills of his teammates. Viaduct definitely seems like his strongest map, and he has won plenty of rounds for Don't Trip that they maybe do not deserve. The team looks a little rough at the moment, but I do not think Xensity in the midst of a roster change will be able to push them too hard. Blaze and Dummy are also incredibly strong on the map, and despite the notion that Viaduct is a "DM map," there are a lot of nuanced tactics that go into it revolving around the timing of pushes, and Tyrone and crew have so much experience that they will be more than aware of them. I do think Xensity's raw DM on Relic, mausy, and rb will push Don't Trip for some rounds, but even after their upset against LASER BEAMS, I cannot see them pulling off the win.

INVITE POWER RANKINGS - WEEK 2

1. Classic Mixup -- (~)
2. bp -- (UP 1)
3. Don't Trip -- (DOWN 1)
4. Fully Torqued- -- (~)
5. Blight Xensity -- UP 2)
6. The Chess Club -- (~)
7. Apocalypse Gaming -- (DOWN 2)
8. Vector Gaming -- (~)

The only changes came from the bp victory over Don't Trip (and the lengthy and solid results bp were getting in scrims)< and the surprisingly strong performance Xensity put on in week one. Taking a round off of a LAN contender, and getting some rounds against Classic Mixup, made them look very strong. Maybe even strong enough that I should bump them ahead of Fully Torqued-, but I made enough kneejerk movements in my standings, so I feel content with this for now. I still think that, regardless of all else, the top four I have here is the top four we will see at LAN.
